Important Notes for Best Results
- Battery Selection: Use three 15C–20C power cells, or six 10C–15C power cells to successfully start an electric drill. Standard 18650 cells alone may not deliver enough peak current to start a drill motor.
- Wiring: Connect wires strictly in order — 0V, 4.2V, 8.4V, 12.6V — as per the wiring diagram. Never intentionally short-circuit the board.
- Brushed Motor Loads: Always connect a capacitor (10µF–1000µF) in parallel across the motor's positive and negative terminals to suppress back-EMF that could interfere with the protection circuitry or damage the MOS transistors.
- Cell Balancing: When connecting 3 cell groups in series, ensure each group is at the same voltage. Fully charge each group separately before assembling in series. Mixing cells of unequal capacity or internal resistance reduces overall pack performance significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What lithium battery types are compatible with this 3S BMS protection board?
A: This BMS board is compatible with any lithium cells that have a nominal voltage of 3.6V or 3.7V per cell, including 18650, 26650, and polymer lithium batteries. When wired as a 3S (3 cells in series) configuration, the pack operates at a nominal 11.1V / 12V with a maximum charge voltage of 12.6V–13.0V.
Q: Can this BMS board be used to power an electric drill?
A: Yes — this is an enhanced version of the 3S 20A BMS board specifically designed to handle the high starting currents of electric drills, supporting peak starting currents up to 60A. However, you must use high-discharge-rate cells (15C–20C power batteries) rather than standard 18650 cells, as standard 18650s do not provide sufficient peak current to start a drill motor.
Q: What does the AUTO Recovery function do?
A: The AUTO Recovery function means the board will automatically reset itself after a protection event (such as an overcurrent or over-discharge trigger) without requiring manual intervention. Once the fault condition is cleared — for example, once the load is removed or the battery voltage recovers — the board resumes normal operation on its own.
Q: Why do I need a capacitor when using a brushed motor with this board?
A: Brushed DC motors generate a reverse voltage (back-EMF) when they spin down or are switched off. This reverse voltage spike can interfere with the BMS protection circuitry or even damage the MOS transistors on the board. Connecting a capacitor (10µF–1000µF) in parallel across the motor terminals absorbs these spikes and protects the board.
